How to export a whole WhatsApp chat with photos and voice messages
Two ways: a regular export for smaller chats, and your phone backup when WhatsApp only offers to export without media.
Option 1. Export the chat
- Open the chat in WhatsApp → ⋮ (Android) or the contact name (iPhone) → More → Export chat.
- Choose Include media.
- Save the .zip and move it to your computer via Google Drive, email or cable.
- Open the WhatsApp extract and drop in the .zip. No need to unzip it.
If WhatsApp only offers “Without media”, that export has no file names, so voice messages and photos can't be matched. Use option 2.
Option 2. Phone backup (Android)
The backup holds the whole conversation history, and the Media folder holds voice messages, photos and documents. You need three things: the msgstore.db.crypt15 file, the 64-digit key and the Media folder.
Turn on an encrypted backup with a 64-digit key
- WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → End-to-end encrypted backup → Turn on.
- Choose Use 64-digit encryption key instead (not a password or passkey). Write the key down on paper.
- Tap Back up and wait until it finishes.
Never send the 64-digit key to anyone and don't keep it next to the backup: it unlocks all your chats.
Find the files on your phone
In the “My Files” app, open:
Internal storage / Android / media / com.whatsapp / WhatsApp / Databases | |
| WhatsApp Business | Internal storage / Android / media / com.whatsapp.w4b / WhatsApp Business / Databases |
- Copy
msgstore.db.crypt15and check that it has today's date. - From the folder one level up (
WhatsApporWhatsApp Business) copy theMediafolder.WhatsApp Voice Notes,WhatsApp ImagesandWhatsApp Documentsare enough.
.crypt14 files or files with an old date are old backups. You need the newest .crypt15, from the app (WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business) that holds the chat.
Move them to your computer
- Windows: connect a cable and choose “File transfer” on the phone.
- Mac: Finder doesn't show Android phones. Connect a cable and use the free OpenMTP app.
- Without a cable: Google Drive or a USB stick (formatted exFAT for files over 4 GB).
Open KeepMyChat
- Open the WhatsApp extract and press “Backup…”.
- Pick
msgstore.db.crypt15, enter the 64-digit key (spaces are fine) → “Decrypt backup”. - Choose the chat, select the
Mediafolder → “Open chat”.
The key is never stored: the field is cleared right after decryption, and other chats are neither shown nor saved.
When you're done
If you no longer want a backup with this key, turn off the end-to-end encrypted backup in WhatsApp settings or create a new key.
Just one chat for your lawyer
In the app, use “Case package for a lawyer” to create an encrypted .chatcase file. It contains only this chat, its files, transcripts, translations and marks. Your lawyer opens it on this same site with your password. Share the password separately, not in the same email.
